Could you please try out the binary you downloaded from my site with the 
above XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 setting? As in

XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 ./nedit

If the problem goes away, then the binary on my site is not broken (in 
this way, at least).
