Object "" does not have windowed ancestor

I am attempting to run nedit for the first time on a 64-bit Itanium system under HP-UX 11.23.  I pulled the bits from nedit-5.5-ia64-11.23.depot. When I run nedit, the window comes up briefly, complete with text if a file was selected, then shuts down with the error 'Error: Object "" does not have windowed ancestor'.  Any ideas what I must do to get it to run?
