I have the same problem with Ubuntu 9.04, running NEdit with their
binary: nedit -V gives:
   nedit -V
   NEdit 5.5

Running Motif: 2.1 [unknown]
        Server: The X.Org Foundation 10600000
Visual: 24-bit TrueColor (ID 0x21, Default)
        Locale: en_US.UTF-8

Note that I also tried using the original Motif binary
   nedit -V
   UTF8 locale not supported.
