Er, thanks.  That's what I needed to know.  Turns out I'd forgottent that I
had replaced nedit with a shell script that set an environment variable
before invoking the binary, and I screwed up the shell quoting in that
script (i.e. 'nedit.bin $*' instead of 'nedit.bin "$@"').  All better now.
