What is the plan for future releases of NEdit?

I am a long-time user of NEdit who uses it only on more-or-less standard
commercial platforms (HP-UX, Solaris, SLES90). Our organization has
recently made NEdit 5.5 available to all users on our various platforms.
I'd like to get an update on the next planned release.

What is the status of the next version (5.6?), which I seem to remember
has been in pre-release state for quite a while? What remains to be done
to be able to release a new version? What fixes/features will this new
version contain?
