Future of NEdit?

I agree with Aaron's sentiments. Can we separate the discussion of
Motif/Lesstif/Ubuntu/Gutsy/Dapper/Breezy from the question of what is
happening with the next version, which I seem to remember has been in
pre-release state for quite a while? What is the status of 5.6? What
remains to be done to be able to release a new version? What
fixes/features would a new version contain?
Thanks to all who contribute to supporting this great editor.

As for keeping NEdit alive, I'm quite unsure how to do this. :-) I am
merely an user that enjoys the editor. Who is leading development at
the moment? It seems to me that I recall NEdit has lost any main
developer?
