From the top of my head:
- NEdit is highly coupled, with a high-cohesion object smack in the
middle, which should be broken apart.
- No Unicode support.
- Settings system is highly improvable.
There were some attempts to fix all three, but most developers seem to
think that everything is fine.

For all practical purposes the result of that is no longer NEdit. I'd
rather see it as a new project which borrows stuff from NEdit's
codebase.
