sluggish screen refresh

I've just installed the precompiled NEdit 5.5 binary on a freshly
installed FC6 Linux box, and I notice screen refresh while scrolling is
very sluggish, even with syntax highlighting turned off. I don't have
this problem with other apps on the same system, or with other systems
where I use NEdit on FC6. It looks like I might have some weird
hardware/X11/Motif interaction.
