copy/paste not working

Hi,
A friend at work has a problem I've seen mentioned in the past in the
mailing list, but I couldn't find a definite solution. The problem is,
after a while from opening a new X-server (we use VNC to connect),
NEdit's copy-paste stops working. The operation doesn't work whether
he uses the keyboard or the menu items. Selecting and middle clicking
still works.
I was hoping someone knows a fix...
I've made sure that num/scroll-lock are not turned on.
I couldn't understand the output of the "xev" program mentioned by the
FAQ, so I can't debug his existing keybindings, but I didn't see
anything suspicious/related in his .Xdefaults or .cshrc files (we use
tc-shell as login shell).
I didn't understand the solution offered in the FAQ regarding virtual
key-bindings, even if I though it was related - what are F16, F18 keys
have to do with copy/paste? I've never seen such keys on a keyboard...
The problems occurs on both Sun-Solaris and Linux stations. Here are
the versions of NEdit (basically the binaries downloaded from
nedit.org):
