Error: Nedit 5.5 closes on File Open

Hi. I'm new to the list, but I'm having an issue:

I'm running Kubuntu 7.04.  I downloaded Nedit 5.5 (executable) from the 
website mirror and installed it into /usr/local/bin. When I run Nedit, 
if I use any menu command or keyboard shortcut that would bring up a 
dialog box (Open [Ctrl-O], for instance), Nedit closes and disappears.  
Just goes away. No error messages, no anything.  When I run it again, 
it's fine, until I try to open a file or other dialog (...) operations. 

I downloaded a copy of 5.4 to see if it was a version problem, but 5.4 
does the exact same thing; and I tried downloading another copy of 5.5 
from a different mirror (and the .bz2 instead of the .gz) to see if I 
just got a bad copy.  No; same result.

I like the Nedit format and the feature set, but obviously not being 
able to open files does present a problem. 

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.
