Seems to me recyling any sort of visual for the line is going to run 
into this conflict (background highlight, foreground change, 
underlining, etc.).

We either prioritize and live with the conflict (e.g., selection vs. 
syntax highlighting) or invent a different visual (say, accent marks on 
the edges).

Mixing colors is an interesting idea, but it sometimes can produce 
unpredictable and unreadable results.  You'd have to make sure the 
background doesn't mix to something close to the foreground color, and 
then decided what to do if it does.
