Not easily, as this is done as part of the background while drawing
the text, not drawn on its own.

I use a heavy cursor, maybe that helps.

That might be a problem, I rarely use background highlights.
Of course the collision is also visible with selections. I think the
solution would be to add the colors and use a resulting new color.
