I've googled around for a solution, but nothing usable came up. It 
appears to be impossible to identify ARGB visuals without making use of 
the newer X extensions.

Setting XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS on startup is probably the best solution.
I'll see if I can make it work.
