NEdit problem in Mandriva 2007/KDE

I've just installed Mandriva 2007/x86_64 on a new IBM Intellistation A
(dual Opteron 280's), and find I'm having a problem with commands like
"Shift Left" and "Shift Right" in NEdit: when I select a set of lines,
and do the shift -- once! -- and the selection disappears, so that one
has to re-select in order to shift more than one column (and that just
one column at a time).

This not only happens with a local "nedit" but also with remote
"nedit"s -- in this case,

Any suggestions how to go back to the previous (selection stays
active during shift operation) behavior?

[I had trouble with "Attempt to paste from unlocked copy buffer"
messages on Mandriva's native "nedit" on this machine, and instead
installed from the "nedit" home-page download, btw.]

Thanks!! --
