Interactive Recognition Patterns

Hi,
I'm interested in providing users a way to open a data file and
highlight items that are of interest to them that they can change while
the file's open without having to know how to navigate-to and modify the
recognition pattern. Ideally I'd provide them a Tk-based GUI they could
call via the nedit's shell menu that would change the pattern for them
and have it take effect immediately. Is this possible?

I've found one clunky way that requires modifying the nedit.rc file
after the data file is open. I run a shell menu command to re-call
nedit with the -import arg specifying a file containing a changed
highlightPattern. Now I have a second nedit window with the new regex
in-place so when they open the datafile from here the new items are
highlighted. This has several cons that I'll explain further if
anyone's interested.

Anyone have an idea better than mine? My apologies if I've missed the
way to do this in the documentation and mailing list archives.
