In addition to the other hints you should check whether you're using
lesstif, see Help -> Version.  With real Motif the dialog should be
sized to fit directories and files.  It's one of the drawbacks of
lesstif that this resizing doesn't work.  You can get a version of
nedit built with Motif from  nedit.org/ftp.
