Background Color for Syntax Highlighting

Hi,
currently the background color that can be set for syntax
highlighting doesn't go beyond newlines. This is a valid choice in
situations where it is important to see trailing white spaces for
example. However, there is another use where one likes to
distinguish different parts of a file, standard example would be to
distinguish comments (where white spaces aren't important) from code
parts. In this case it would look much better if the background
color would go beyond the newlines (like the background color
showing a selection does).
I believe this shouldn't be an either-or decision. There should be
both options available, ie the background color should take an option
like "beyond newline" or "whole line" that can be chosen according
to the situation.
Cheers,
Jörg
