I have a rough patch here that could do what you want. I have yet to
find a way to smooth it a bit, so it will take yet a little while to
publish it. (And I have a new pesky bug in my Patch collection to take
some time away.)

I'm working on reading Vim's modelines. That way you wouldn't need a
new set of hieroglyphs in the files for NEdit. This and the patch
above are related, so you have to wait a little here, too.
