Good lead. I found a page about building a Universal version of
Mozilla, and their strip options (-x -S) worked.

I've put them on my page for the time being, so you can download them
from http://www.anoved.net/nedit.html
Anyone else with an Intel Mac able to confirm that these work on their system?
