copy paste problem

This happens in 5.4 and 5.3

I'm running xfce3 under linux through vnc4

I'm using nc with about 60 open sessions.

Ctrl-c and ctrl-v don't work. They have worked
in the past, but not now.  If I start a new
nedit session (not nc), it doesn't work either.

Middle mouse select/pasting works fine.

I suspect that it is desktop/vnc related, but
hopefully  someone will have an idea where
to start looking.
