Yes, that's a useful idea. It was a feature of thextpad on Windows that I
thought was very nice. I would just provide a colored background (backlight
like) for the empty space on the left rather than draw anything.

Another useful thing would be visual whitespace. This is easy for space and
tab, but not for newline since it complicates the character counting in
the widget.
