An easy lead in would be
- install Ubuntu (or use it live I guess)
- install libmotif-dev
- download and build NEdit
- marvel at the missing dependencies.¹
I can't even find out whether the package has a maintainer, but there
are some bugs that seems to be pertinent:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nedit/+bug/157917
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nedit/+bug/149371
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nedit/+bug/96536
Please note that I'm not aware of any proof that this is actually a
misbuilt OM. I just connected the dots, namely the reports that it is
nearly unusable, the basic error in the package¹ and the stability of
OM elsewhere. If it turns out to be NEdit's fault, please get back to
us soon.
The discussion on NEdit's mailing list starts about here:

Thanks!

Rarely do we find people who willingly engage in hard, solid thinking.
There is an almost universal quest for easy answers and half-baked
solutions. Nothing pains some people more than having to think.
