Summary: Clipboard copy/paste very slow over slow links
Initial Comment:
Editing turns to custard when copying selected text to clipboard with
^C while working over a slow (128kbit) link. Reaction times to
anything are many seconds from then on. The correct state is
unrecoverable and the nedit server process must be killed, forcing a
complete restart of all open windows. The clipboard is unusable.
SuSE Linux 8.1 ix86, kernel 2.4.19, nedit 5.3, openmotif 2.2.2
(libXm.so.3.0.1), all compiled by SuSE with gcc 3.2. When nedit is
compiled with gcc 2.95.3 and linked static with openmotif
2.1.30MLI4 it's equally bad.
I hope it's not an X error or a motif "feature". Thanks for any
pointers,

Does using xclipboard changes anything?

Try starting xclipboard to recover. Does this work?

One thing I've noticed is "klipper" on KDE 3.2 makes
everything slow. It was especially terrible in Mozilla.
Disabling that may help you.

On my computers, nedit is *sometimes* slow for everything I want to copy
and paste in / from the clipboard. If I select and use the middle button
it's
also the same. (but it's quite impredicable, sometimes it's correct for
pasting, though on KDE it seems to be worse)
NEdit 5.4
Nov 20, 2003
it's running on debian/knoppix linux. I had similar pbs on all the debian
built
nedit I tested (on 3 computers)
Built on: Linux, 486, GNU C

Running Motif: 2.1 [unknown]

I can confirm this slowness when using Nedit as a remote X11 client.
Ping round-trip time from host running the X server to host running Nedit
is around 50 msec, that doesn't explain the clipboard slowness.

Another workaround. Over slow links, I've been using
TightVNC lately, which makes things much faster, and this
problem does not show up.

Thanks. Although is is possible to use the middle-button to
paste, efficient editing requires both. It also requires having to
remember when using nedit over the network, and then not
using some features one is used to using all the time with
every app. As you say operations complete after several
seconds - yes, each operation. Move cursor one character -
wait 5 seconds. Move cursor down - wait 5 seconds. Type
character - wait 5 seconds. Sorry, this is completely unusable.
Accidentally typing ctrl-C means restarting nedit from scratch.
Not acceptable.
I am becoming disillusioned with nedit due to the large number
of problems with it which aren't addressed. Most of them due
to this motif rubbish.

This is a very old bug, and I've seen it myself. One way
around it is to use middle-mouse button to paste the
selection, which seems to take no time at all.
I've never seen NEdit hang completely, it usually takes a
few seconds to complete the clipboard operation if you're
patient.
